Counting the Cost of Family Failure (Briefing Note 2)

Our annual index of the cost of family failure has risen dramatically from £36.7 billion to £41.7 billion. This means failed relationships cost each UK taxpayer £1350 a year. Only when this cost is taken seriously will people recognise how important relationships are to wellbeing and happiness. Policy‐makers and implementers can, and should, make informed choices in terms of public motivation, opportunity and support which will lead to more stable relationships, thriving lives and thereby reduce the costs of relationships failure.
